History

The production, hand weaving process and cloth manufacturing by hand and simple tools has been in practice in the country since time immemorial. But, with the advent of industrialization and modernization, cotton production and processing took a turn toward machines and factories around the 19^th century. The first cotton textile factory was set up in Ghusuri, which is near Kolkata in the year 1818. With the inauguration of the first factory, the industry saw quite a many changes and up-gradation and has withstood the trials of each era. Gujarat remains one of the largest producer and manufacturer of cotton and eyelet lace in India.

India is also topping the list of fancy fabric manufacturers in the world.

Cotton textile industry can be roughly classified into three sub-categories, namely,

Problems

Cotton manufacturing and processing has seen a huge change in the methods of production and has adapted to the changing scenarios. In spite of the fact that the industry was well adaptive, it faced a few issues and problems and it sad to say that, few of the problems still persist.

Types of laces available in India

• Chantilly Lace

One of the most popular laces of all time, this lace has delicate floral motifs which is woven entirely on net and is outlined by silk threads. The delicate mesh used to make this lace helps the designs to stand out. Originally, black color was used to design this type of lace but with passage of time, other colors have found their place in the lace design.

• Alencon or French embroidered lace

Another popular lace used around the world, this delicate lace has net background and has beads and cords embellished on the raised motifs. A heavier silk cord, known as the cordonnet, is used to outline the motifs to raise it against the background fabric. This type of lace is quite popular for making wedding gowns.

• Crochet lace

The lace that we all have been seeing from childhood, crochet lace has retained its culture of being woven by hand, still. Originally, designed as an imitation to the famous Venetain laces, it has retained its popularity.

• Venise Lace

Also, otherwise known as the Venetian lace, Venise Lace is a very fine lace with the motifs that are heavily raised. The lace does not have a net background but is woven on a cloth that is later disintegrated to leave the motifs and stand out.

Know About the Cotton Fabric Manufacturing Industry in India

The first modern factory of cotton fabric manufacturing industry was planted in 1818 in Fort Glaster, Kolkata. The first successful factory from Indian capital was imposed in Mumbai by Kavas Ji Dabar in 1854. The dry textile industry is a pure raw material-based industry. Hence the establishment of the industry can be done anywhere in the raw material sector or the market area. In this industry, Development is done in cotton producing areas (Mumbai, Ahmedabad etc). Later it was decentralized in the areas of market access. The production of cotton textiles is in three areas - factory mill area, power looms (power loom area), handloom (handloom area).

The contribution of cotton cloth to the total textile production is approximately 70 per cent. There are many factors contributing to cotton fabric industry being concentrated in and around Mumbai, which are as follows:

• It is easy to import the capital goods, chemicals etc. from the location of the port and export finished goods.
• Mumbai is well connected to cotton-producing areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra by the sand and roads.
• Wet coastal climates prove favorable to fabric construction.
• With the development of the chemical industry around Mumbai, the necessary inputs are easily available.
• Availability of financial and capital resources helps in the development of the industry.
• Cheap labour is available for the industry.

Lack of raw materials, mainly long-fibre cotton

The industry has to face the challenge of continuous morbidity and captivity. The reason for this is the uncertainty of raw materials, low productivity of machines and workers, growing competition in the power loom area, lack of modernization and occupation of management problems.

Most of the bees and looms are of old age. The percentage of automated lumbering in India is the lowest in the world.
